The Beatles - Yellow Submarine (Album)
65Only Four New Beatles Songs
1969's Yellow Submarine wasn't really a full Beatles album as it only included four new Beatles songs along with two other previously released songs (the title track which was originally released on 1966's Revolver and "All You Need Is Love" which was first released as a single in the summer of '67 and then that winter on Magical Mystery Tour.)
Along with the six Beatles songs (two previously released and four released for the first time) there were seven George Martin orchestral instrumentals which while they have a few nice moments are pretty forgettable overall.
Remastered Beatles
A remastered stereo version of Yellow Submarine is included in The Beatles Stereo Box Set released on September 9, 2009.
While no mono version of the album is included (because the George Martin instrumentals were never mixed in mono) in The Beatles Mono Box Set, all of the Beatles songs from the album are included (on Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, and Mono Masters respectively.)
The Movie
While I can't really recommend this album (except for "Hey Bulldog" and "It's All Too Much") I can say that the movie itself is worth checking out. I don't like it as much as some people do, but it's definitely worth watching and it could be a great way of getting your kids into The Beatles (hey, they're going to be getting fed a lot of awful music by their peers, you might as well try to steer them somewhere better!)
Yellow Submarine Songtrack
There was an album released in 1999 called Yellow Submarine Songtrack that is mostly overlooked by people. It includes the six songs on the original release along with nine more Beatles songs while excluding the George Martin instrumentals. All 15 of these Beatles songs were featured in the movie (which is why it has the title "songtrack.")
It's definitely a far superior album to the original. In fact, it's a pretty nice collection of psychedelic era Beatles. I would say it would even make a decent introduction to the band. It's nice in that it includes not just "hits" (like The Beatles 1) but a variety of interesting songs from their most creative era.
Another reason it's worth checking out is that it includes new (very "modern" sounding) mixes of each of the 15 tracks. These are different mixes than are included anywhere else.
